The Oku Memorial Trophy was contested for the seventh time on Saturday 3rd December 2011. For the second consecutive year it was staged at Oxford University RFC’s ground at Iffley Road, Oxford. As per last year in addition to the Kew Occasionals RFC, a London based team featuring many former Oxford players, and London Japanese RFC, both of which sides have played in the memorial tournament since it was started in 2005, Ambassador Oku’s alma mater Hertford College and Vincent’s Club, the prestigious university sportsman’s club of which he was the first Japanese member, fielded teams.  On a cold but sunny day a strong Kew Occasionals side registered two comprehensive victories to win the trophy which was presented afterwards to joint Kew captains Tom Clark and Tom Quayle by Lynn Evans, former OURFC coach during Oku’s rugby career at Oxford. Over 80 players and supporters celebrated afterwards in the Iffley  Road pavilion,  and then after being hosted to drinks in the Principal’s lodgings at Hertford College, moved on to Vincent’s Club. Outstanding London Japanese captain Kazushi Tomita was voted Player of the Tournament. Before the games Ambassador Oku’s friend and colleague Minister Hiroshi Suzuki from the Japanese Embassy in London addressed the teams, recalling his personal memories of ‘Katsu’, and thanked all participants for continuing to honour his memory through this annual event.
